Guest speaker Hugh Fraser. Hugh is an agricultural engineer and barn historian. Along with his business OTB Farm Solutions, he has written one book and is working on a second detailing the history of timber-frame barns in Ontario. Hugh is president of “Ontario Barn Preservation” a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, documenting and promoting Ontario barns. He will be delivering a talk about the history and typography of barns in Ontario, preservation methods and ways in which skilled tradespeople can help to preserve barns. He will also be discussing his two books, and how students can get involved with “Ontario Barn Preservation” in the future.

Benefit/Merit:
Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of timber-frame barns in Ontario. Seeing as there are many different styles of barn in this province, it would be important for anyone wishing to get into the field of timber framing or barn restoration to have a thorough understanding of the different styles and construction methods. Students will also have the opportunity to network with the speaker for volunteer or employment opportunities all over the province. This event will also start to foster a relationship between Algonquin College and Ontario Barn Preservation which could provide opportunities for future students to volunteer, study and network.
