Dear Student Association,

I hope this email finds you well. I am the Student Representative for the graduating class of the Practical Nursing program this year. I am contacting you today to humbly ask you for some funding to help the practical nursing students experience a much-deserved pinning ceremony before entering the profession as nurses. As a hospital, you must be aware of the importance that nurses play and have played in creating the supportive environment that all major healthcare settings require.

Studying through COVID has been extremely hard, especially for the Algonquin practical nursing program students. From their first semester, they were in clinical helping nursing homes that had to take care of the elderly and were hit by COVID. Despite the student’s fears, they went into clinical, learnt, refined their skills and were able to work on the frontlines in all the established hospitals and nursing homes around Ottawa. Practical Nursing students have experienced physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging circumstances to study online and come to work at the various healthcare settings to learn their skills in a COVID environment. My colleagues continue to do so as we wrap up our education during our internship (consolidation), well on our way to stepping into the shoes of becoming frontline healthcare workers.

As the student representative of my impressive and most deserving colleagues, I would like to organize a pinning ceremony to celebrate their achievements of getting through these past two years and earning the practical nursing degree they most rightfully deserve. A pinning ceremony is a traditional part of many nursing institutions’ graduating events. The pinning formalizes the transition from student to professional nurse. The tradition itself has roots back to the 12th century but is more typically associated with Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing, who presented medals of excellence to exemplary nursing graduates at her London school.

Your donation will go towards helping book the space for the ceremony, ordering the nursing pins for my class, getting battery-operated candles for the Florence Nightingale lighting in the ceremony, and decor items and snacks for the attendees and their families.
